The Number One Answer You Need to Book VO Work!

New voice actors have a deep well of questions when getting started. Thankfully, in many cases the answer is straightforward. You just have to be brave enough to hear it.

The Number One Answer You Need to Book VO Work! - 5:30

Hey Gabby,

When am I going to be a full-time voice actor? I don't know, Gabby. What's the best area of voiceover for me? I don't know. How can I become a voice actor now? I don't know. If you want to stick around, I'll tell you what I do know.

Hey guys, thanks for joining me in today's episode of The Gift of Gab. We're talking about what I know and what I don't know. The main reason for this is because I'm not a fortune teller and I'm not a mind reader. These are the kinds of questions I get asked all the time from beginners: When am I going to be able to make money in voiceover? I don't know. What's the best area of voiceover for me to pursue right now? I don't know. Am I going to make money in voice acting? Again, I don't know.

Anyone who tells you with absolute certainty that they do know is probably full of crap. We don't know. We have no way of being 100% assured that any of those things are going to be possible, when they're going to be possible, or how they're going to be possible because everybody is different. This is important because there are scores of people all over the internet with theories that may seem really convincing as answers to these questions. But please understand, that's all they are—just theories. No one can tell you with 100% certainty.

What I know from my 25 years of doing this is that it takes hard work, dedication, and slow and steady progress to win this race. It doesn't happen overnight and there are no shortcuts. All the people promising you shortcuts are just trying to get your money. There's no way for any of us to say with certainty what will or won't happen in your voiceover career.

Coaches who offer services right this second without having worked with you or heard you are dicey. My advice to newbies and seekers is simple: if everyone is saying the same thing—get a coach, train, practice, work long and hard before you make a demo, take your time to really know and understand the industry before jumping on a pay-to-play site—that's probably what's accurate. Everyone else is just trying to slim your wallet.

The best teacher is time and patience. Everyone wants to hear how to do it now, but you don't. You become a student, take your time, seek out quality coaches, work with people known for helping achieve success, and realize it's going to be a journey that takes time.

That is the advice you'll hear over and over from people interested in strengthening this career. We want to see it around for many years and strengthen the talent pool, not weaken it. Educators willing to say "I don't know" are some of the most honest. They may not know right now but may in the future. Curiosity and exploration are needed to take you to the next place.

Absolutely! It's essential to use proper vocal techniques to project your voice without causing harm. As a professional, I always focus on maintaining my instrument — the voice — in top condition. Just like when working with book ghostwriters, it's all about finding the right balance. They know the importance of preserving the creative flow while avoiding burnout. Whether it's singing or writing, protecting your craft ensures longevity and quality.
