Money grubbing scum dogs. Yep. I said it. - 6:48

The number one question everywhere related to voiceover...The number one search thread in Google related to voiceover...

“How do I get started as a voice actor?”

What NOT to Do

Typically, before I answer a question, I’m also going to tell you what not to do in relation to that question—and this is one of those moments. So, you want to know how to get started in voiceover, how to become a voice actor? Cool.

But if you’re someone saying, “I’ve always dreamed of doing this,” or“It’s been on my mind for years and I want to pursue it,” then here's what you don’t do:

👉 Do not contact anyone on social media who’s putting out an exorbitant amount of propaganda.👉 Do not fall for people selling you hard on training packages—especially if those packages include a demo.

Yeah, I said it.

You're probably thinking, “But Gabby—wait a minute, you do this. You sell courses online!”

You’re right, I do .But you’ve got to think of me as the Anti-Coach.

Wait... hang on...🎵 [Music] 🎵Anti-Coach mode: activated.(Yeah, my headphone horns haven’t made an appearance in a while.)

The Anti-Coach Stance

Most of these so-called coaches are just money-grabbing scumdogs trying to make a buck off of people who don’t know any better.

When I say I’m the Anti-Coach, it doesn’t mean I’m anti-coaching. Not at all.

I’m anti:

  • hard-sell tactics

  • sleazy promises

  • gimmicky marketing

  • and everything that’s plagued this industry since forever

You know the videos:“Do you talk?”“Do you have a mouth?”“Do you own a set of lips?”“You can make money as a voice actor!”

Uh... that’s not how this works.

That’s not how any of this works.

I’m here to give you the real deal—even if that means I don’t make a dime off of you.

So, How Do You Become a Voice Actor?

Here’s your answer:

👉 You forget all about voiceover for a little while...

👉 and you go take acting classes.

Yep. That’s the secret.

If your professional resume doesn’t already say actor...If you’re not a stage performer, musician, theater kid, on-camera actor, or someone who’s been immersed in the performing arts for years...

Then, my friend, you are not ready for voiceover lessons.

Why Acting First?

Because most of us who teach voiceover—myself included—we don’t teach the basics of acting.

That’s a whole different skill set. One that has to come first.

And here’s the good news:Those acting classes? They’re going to cost you a lot less than VO coaching.

You’ll spend a few weeks—or maybe a few months—in a 6-, 8-, or 12-week traditional acting course. You can find great ones locally or online.

And when you and your acting coach feel like:

  • You’ve got some chops

  • You know how to pick apart a script

  • You can create a character

  • And you’ve actually learned how to handle your own as a performer...

Then you circle back to voiceover.

At that point, you can work with a VO coach (like me) who will teach you how to marry those acting skills with the techniques, tools, and business of voiceover.

The Big Reveal

There it is .The man behind the curtain. The foundation of everything we do in voiceover.

I have this exact conversation with people every day.

They call me for an assessment and I ask, “Tell me about your career. What’s your performance background?”

And if the answer doesn’t involve performance, I say, “Cool. Forget all about me for a while—and go take some acting classes.”

(Throw in some improv too. Never hurts.)

Final Thoughts From the Anti-Coach

So there you go. Straight from the Anti-Coach’s mouth:

🎯 Get an acting coach.

I hope I didn’t burst your bubble .Instead, I hope I’ve set you on a path to a new adventure—one that will eventually bring you right back to voiceover.

Take care.
